Scott’s all smiles. The team’s in high spirits.
“The sailors were treated to light to moderate winds in Shanwei today. Some sailors moved up a few notches today, with most of them securing a strong hold on their podium positions. The keelboat match racing team did better with three wins out of five matches today. The quality of competition among the Asian nations is increasingly good which makes it an even tougher challenge for our sailors. With four races remaining, Team Singapore is going to rev up to maximum gear to go hard, to prove their mettle on the water.” — Mark Robinson, Team Manager

Handsome and Happy Fernie with his amigos
There’s one occasion we are certainly not running out of in Shanwei.
Birthdays!
I believe the team brought enough greeting cards before leaving for China but nothing can beat the gift of being part of a team this united while enjoying the beautiful sport of sailing.
To Fernando Alegre, Optimist coach. We have a birthday message for you.
“Estimado Coach Happy, FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS
Usted es un excelente entrenador!
Pero, uno problemo..
Que siempre tenemos que volver a la costa despues de la puesta del sol?
Y a veces…
Usted consigue así que se llevó durante los informes, usted comienza a hablarnos en español!
Usted es el mejor coach nunca! Le amamos.
Muy caliente”
(One more birthday to celebrate before the Games end!)

Happy sailors – Ryan and Siobhan
“See Mark, look at the birthday present I got for you!” Ryan Lo said to Mark Robinson, referring to the 2, 1 he scored today.
I bet Mark’s the happiest camper in Shanwei now.
Now to the serious stuff:
“The storm front passed last night left a very weak North-east gradient wind, which in today’s heat is being fought by the thermal Southerly sea breeze, effectively cancelling each other out, resulting in light winds today. Our sailors maintained a consistent performance, proving their versatility in both medium and light conditions. The 420, 470, Hobie 16 and Laser standard sailors did well with top three scores, they are now all in podium positions. Similarly, the Optimist sailors are both placed third overall. The keelboat match racing team had a challenging start to the qualifiers but it is still very early in the competition for them, they will aim for better scores tomorrow. The team spirit remains high midway into the competition, the team is focused, and are looking forward to seize the best of out of the remaining six races in the competition.” — Mark Robinson, Team Manager

Happy 3rd Birthday (we shall not reveal your true age). (Editor: I think they have already did.). Thank you for being so patient and understanding. We respect you for your dedication and committment to SingaporeSailing. Although we have known you for a short period of time (Editor: Lucky girls!), you’ve turned out to be very different from what we had expected. We see you as a stern and merciless boss BUT you have a wicked sense of humour which never fails to lighten up the atmosphere. (Editor: Hahahahaha) While you are away in Shanwei, we miss your signature cough and the coffee aroma from the pantry in the mornings. Take care and have fun in Shanwei. We will always be happy campers heh? One more thing: please do not forget our extension numbers again. Happy birthday and may your wishes come true! Okay lah, have fun! — Jiawen & Lingying
Birthday boys and girls, we have a party awaiting you at NSC when you get home on 23rd. Everybody’s invited. (Told you we are feeling generous.)

“Team Singapore had another good run today, maintaining leads in the 420 and Laser standard events. Other sailors did well too – Kimberly bounced back today with a confident showing, scoring a 1st and 3rd, in third overall in the Optimist girls event. The 470 women and Hobie 16 pairs are both in third overall. We are now into the second day of racing and will continue to keep our focus on achieving success at the Games.” — Mark Robinson, Team Manager

Our judges of the Caption Contest are none other than “parachute packers” Toh Jiawen, Soh Lingying and Sara Tan who voted unanimously for the winning caption.
Being the newest additions to the SingaporeSailing family has had absolutely no bearing on the magnitude of their contributions to the team as well as the sport.
With Jiawen around, there’s never a dull moment. From conducting fitness tests to cheering on the sailors, her enthusiasm is infectious. (This is a serious health warning to those with weak hearts, steer clear!)
Lingying’s fluent liaising skills ensured that the logistics for this Games went as smoothly as planned. Lingying handles last minute changes in travel plans with such amazing efficiency, and without losing her head too.
Sara’s the office’s tall elf, her versatile pair of hands works magic as a double-handed crew and a baker. She is also our resident “sai-kang” warrior.
We must not forget the other parachute-packers at SingaporeSailing, and also parents and supporters, for cheering the team on and your unwavering belief in our sailors. Little is known of your work behind the scenes of all competitions. Nevertheless, thank you all for making this outing to China a successful one thus far!

For the caption contest! The winning caption is:
“No need for burgee. I’ve got my very own little “birdie” to tell me the direction of the wind ”

The winner is Adelia Naomi Yokoyama! Congratulations and thank you for participating in our first caption contest! You will be hearing from us soon.
To all entrants, thank you for reading our blog, and look out for more goodies to come.

“It has been a pretty solid day for the team, they did well. Some had first-day jitters, they should settle down the next few days. There’s a big storm coming through the venue tonight, we should be expecting stronger winds tomorrow. The team spirit is high, the sailors are looking to good racing tomorrow to maintain their lead or better their positions,” said Mark Robinson, Team Manager.

To Wearn Haw!

Yes, he’s the star sailor in our earlier blog post. Twice Sportsboy of the Year (1992. 1995), America’s Cup sailor, Olympian, Multi Asian Games and SEA Games medalist, Tan Wearn Haw turns 32 today! The celebrated sailor is helming the keelboat in the Open Match Racing event in a team of four with Colin Ng, Benjamin Tan and Yurii Siegel. The team arrived safely in Shanwei last evening, ain’t the rest happy to see them!
Happy birthday Wearn Haw. May you have a wonderful Asian Games.
